'The Elderly'라는 용어 사용을 지양해야 하는 이유

선배에게 SOP 리뷰를 부탁드렸는데, '노인계층'을 지칭하는 영어 용어에 대한 코멘트를 받았다. 내가 사용하던 'the elderly'는 나이 차별적인 뉘앙스가 담겨 있어서 가급적 사용하지 않는 것이 좋다고 하셨다. 나는 'older people'이 나이 차별적인 뉘앙스일 줄 알았는데 완전히 반대였다!

 

 

노인 관련 용어에 대한 American Medical Association의 지침

American Medical Association

• Discrimination based on age (young or old) is ageism.
• Terms like seniors, elderly, the aged, aging dependents, old-old, young-old, and similar “othering” terms connote a stereotype, avoid using them.
• Terms such as older persons, older people, older adults, older patients, older individuals, persons 65 years and older, or the older population are preferred.
• Use older adults, a term less likely to connote discrimination and negative stereotypes, when describing individuals 65 years old and older.
• Note: In studies that involve human beings, age should always be given specifically (eg, “older people aged 75 to 84 years”)

 

정리하자면,

• 나이를 기반으로 한 차별적인 표현을 사용하면 안된다(이건 당연).
• 그런데, seniors, elderly, the aged, aging dependents, old-old, young-old 그리고 이런 비슷한 용어들은 고정관념을 내포하고 있으므로 사용하면 안된다(이건 몰랐음).
• 이러한 용어 대신, older persons, older people, older adults, older patients, older individuals, persons 65 years and older, the older population와 같은 용어를 사용하는 것이 낫다.
• 고정관념과 차별적 의미가 덜한 older adults와 같은 단어를 사용해야 한다.
• 그리고, 사람과 관련된 연구에서는 항상 75~84세와 같이 구체적으로 나이를 명시해야 한다.

 

elderly의 뉘앙스를 몰라서 많이 사용해왔는데, 이제부터는 older people이나 older adults 같은 단어를 써야겠다.
